Case Study

Secrets, Sadness and Shame. This is what the Moore family was experiencing when they finally called us for help. John had been gambling for over 10 years and the devastating effects had finally taken their toll on him. He was in debt $45,000 and had exhausted all resources to find a way to break even again. And worse yet, John had taken out numerous credit cards in his wife Julie's name without her knowing, until now. Julie is so angry with John, she couldn't see straight. John was feeling suicidal right before Julie found out about the extent of the debt, but now all he feels is relief. Relief that finally he doesn't have to lie or keep secrets any more about how out of control his gambling had gotten. Their two children, Jessica and Joe were confused about why their parents were always fighting and why their dad would forget their birthday parties or to pick them up from school on time.

As the Moore family engaged in treatment and began to slowly repair the damage that had been done to them, they all began to feel a little bit of HOPE. HOPE was a feeling none of them had felt for a very long time. With the help of counseling, the Moore family is beginning to come back together again. John and Julie have worked out a manageable budget together and John is making honest attempts to pay back his gambling debts. He hasn't gambled in 6 months, which hasn't been easy for him. However, he finds great support by attending individual and group sessions to talk honestly, for the first time, about his gambling problem. Julie is still angry but has a better understanding of John's gambling problem and is slowly beginning to trust him again. She is attending individual well as group counseling as for Significant Other's and finds great comfort that she isn't alone with this problem. Jessica and Joe are happy to have their dad around more and are glad that their mom is not as upset all the time. They attend individual and family sessions to talk about how they feel and are happy to see their parents communicating again.

If you or someone you know is affected by problem gambling, please call us at 462 6531 for confidential services. Remember that you're not alone.
