Interview with "M"
FCS: What made you decide to volunteer for CONTACT Lifeline?
"M": After the death of my son, I felt the need to give back and help other families not go through what my family has been through. I found CONTACT Lifeline fell in love with helping others in need.
FCS: What was one of your best experiences volunteering?
"M": I helped a woman with children who was homeless and was not connected to human services in any way. She was so appreciative. I felt very glad to have been able to help her.
FCS: What is your motivation for doing this type of work?
"M": My motivation started out because of my son but now it is because I have a passion for the human services field and plan to go further in this area as a career.
FCS: How does this volunteer experience enhance your life?
"M": I get extreme satisfaction from being able to help others.
FCS: What would you tell someone else who is considering volunteering for CONTACT Lifeline?
"M": It’s a worthwhile organization to be involved in on our quest to help others. It’s all about love and service.
FCS: How have you changed as a person from having this experience?
"M": I think I’m more compassionate and more empathetic to the different situations that people call us with.
Interview with "N"
FCS: What made you decide to volunteer for CONTACT Lifeline?
"N": Because I’m a survivor and I know how it feels to not have somebody to listen and I think that it’s important to offer a helping hand and a listening ear.
FCS: What was one of your best experiences volunteering?
"N": I was able to help a woman in a domestic violence situation who was unfamiliar with the surroundings or the how the human service system could help. I was able to get someone to advocate on her behalf to get in touch with an agency that was able to remove her from her situation and help her attain services.
FCS: What is your motivation for doing this type of work?
"N": It’s helped me to realize that there are a lot of really needy people in our area in desperate situations and I like to assist in any way I can to make their lives easier. It makes me feel good inside to help and it gives me a purpose.
FCS: How does this volunteer experience enhance your life?
"N": It makes me feel good to know that I have the ability to help somebody else out. I feel like I’m setting a good example for my grandchildren about volunteering and doing things for others without always expecting money being attached.
FCS: What would you tell someone else who is considering volunteering for CONTACT Lifeline?
"N": It’s a very rewarding thing to do. They’ll go home feeling proud and they will anticipate the next time they come in knowing that if they help just one person they have made a difference in the community.
FCS: How have you changed as a person from having this experience?
"N": I’ve become less focused on my own problems and more thankful for what I do have.
